You can change the past

17 Mar 2009

You hear people say “you can’t change the past” - that may be true, but you can change the way you perceive the past.  “It’s your story that keeps you where you are” so if you change your story, doesn’t this change the way you see the past?  If you change your story of the past to one that’s based on the benefit of hindsight (viewing it from an objective perspective based on who you are now rather than the person you used to be), doesn’t this free you up to respond to your past in a way that serves you now and in the future, rather than keeping you where you’ve been?   What do YOU think?  Fill in my tips request form for some tips  (Choose topics: “Building a new future” and “Oh to be Free”. It’s great to get to a point where ‘the past ceases to exist’ and you experience true freedom.  To my surprise, I have come to experience this recently.   What’s your experience?

    Yeah, that is so true.
And I just love the title of your how-to - you can turn it around as well.
Try this: How to create a new past and be free in the future!

So, what do you do if you still find it hard to see a positive way of looking at a particularly difficult past event or events?

    Couldn’t agree more.
Our story of the past is our individual view, and even others who share this same past have an individual view that is different from our view; sometimes totally different.
If we can acknowledge that our story is just a story we leave room for change.

I sooo love this insight. What for me was once a traumatic childhood is now the the set of circumstances that has set me free, the scars which sort healing, transformation - it has forged my path, daily inquiry and spiritual practice - if not for such adversity who knows…….. viewing it in this light has indeed deeeply enriched and empowered my life.

However……. it has taken 28 years of applied practice to do so and my wish is for deep empathy for anyone who is not at a place where they can inculcate this as their truth - be kind and gentle…it is a process……
